No messing about, straight into the scrum.
Scrum called, formed, free kick given, taken, ruck happened, turned over and subsequent penalty for holding on.
4 phases
20 years later, the ref would just about be on "crouch"

Attempt to strangle the French ball carrier => knock on advantage for NZ

Gotta say - that first half especially, was not how my memory suggested it was.
Take out the hype, take out the month leading up to it, and France were the better team for 80, not just 40.

Take out Lomu, and the score could very easily have been 20-10 the other way around at half time!

Speed of scrums always stands out in these old matches.

The other stand out is how skillfully the SHs are compared to now. Both were throwing accurate passes that I wouldn't put any money on any current SH making badly. Both were making passes at distances Ben Youngs can only dream of, and making them accurately, rather than the 5m radius that he'd require!

What was the penalty count at half time? 12-1? 14-1?
I thought that was "literally impossible" according to 2007-era kiwis? ;)

This. France really were a couple of bounces away from leading the first half.

I was also really surprised to realise that Kelleher was in for Marshall. Galthie creamed him.

Also, reminiscent of the game last year, the French pack beat seven shades of stolen chardonnay out of the ABs.

I also liked the lack of video reffing and the fact that players got on with it more. Still multiple red cards there nowadays....

Some great players on show, and then a few people who were totally random. That Kiwi 12, Ieremia? Did he do anything?

Lomu bouncing off Benazzi... Dominici's impish genius... Galthie's guts... Magne supreme.... It's like I'm 16 again!

Something that thoroughly thrilled one J. Marhsall who pretty much loathed Kelleher

Marshall thought Kelleher an utter gobshite arrogant piece of shit, on the days he liked him at least. Kelleher thought Marshall simply wasn't as good and flat out in his way.

In some respects similar to O'Gara and Sexton, although those two get on now whereas I don't think there's ever been a rapprochement between the Kiwi 9s

You want to see how much has changed in 13 years, you only have to wait 7 seconds for Lewsey's outrageous shot on the Tigers 9

Women's semifinal? Might be the game were one of the aussie players made a ridiculous try saver.

Oh yes, I remember it now.

Would anyone be interested in me playing the 2002 Autumn Internationals where we played Aus, NZ and SA with probably our best ever side. I have them on DVD and could livestream them through Discord.

Watching those 2019 tries, I kind of confirm two of my chestnuts and concede that I am not so convinced about another two - based only on bolting some speculation/re-interpretation on to very brief highlights. The two plus-points, in terms of try-scoring effectiveness, are that Slade's handling is too good for him not to be a starter and that Launchbury's work in the maul should give him a second row shirt. Where I have to choke on some bias is in accepting how good the attacking contributions were occasionally from Youngs at SH and Daly at FB.

Even your chokes are a little out of whack: Daly's issues are in defence; and the coaches entirely forgot about Youngs for the whole of 2019, whereupon he started to remember how he likes to play rugby
