England Vs Georgia the minute by minute
Such was the exciting feedback from the Italy game that coming into this match only a really dull affair could've dented enthusiasm for this, and so without further ado strap on your strap on and let's get to it.
Minute 1
Georgia kick off to the left, which is foolish in the extreme as Captain England (a faster, more skilful version of Captain America) collects and runs the ball in from 90m for an easy try. That or Faz runs to near the edge of the 22 and Youngs exits with a box kick down the right touchline which JJ chases well but Georgia manage to claim the ball and pass it one out where a little group of forwards take it up into contact, Georgia do take a little ground but end up with the ball carrier off his feet and two players supporting over the ball at a cost to England of nothing as everyone is on their feet. Georgia rinse and repeat and do get Genge off his feet, but with a good bounce time, Georgia have few options on attack so stick a kick into England's 22. Youngs takes the mark under no pressure and plays it back to Daly to kick down the right touchline. The ball finds grass and runs on into Lelo's 22

Minute 2
Georgia kick back outside the Eng 22, Youngs takes and passes infield to Daly who kicks into the Lelo 22, Georgia return the kick again this time off the park heading up towards halfway
England win lineout ball at the front with Joe, who taps down to Youngs who passes out into midfield. It's a really interesting attack shape from England, presenting quite flat on the initial setup but morphs quickly into sending Billy and Lawrence on hard lines which hold the defenders and JJ working around off his wing is sent into a large hole in the Lelos line. JJ draws the fullback and passes wide to May and Daly, but White 15 throws up a hand and knocks the ball on to cut out the pass. Scrum to England.
I rather think White 15 got away with one there, but it happens. And in advance there's no way to know what Owens will care about in all instances.
Minute 3
It's a scrum, it's Owens, nothing happens.

Minute 4
Billy picks up at the base and heads right for White 10, Lelos get him down pretty well tbh. Willis is not fast off the scrum but along with Slade gets over the ball. England play right again where Itoje has worked around from scrumming on the blindside to the the 1st receiver option. Itoje takes contact. Right again just 'cause and Faz drops the ball off to Lawrence, Ewels running as an option inside Faz interests nobody and Faz ball in hand interests nobody, Lawrence gets put down pretty hard but he is rather setup by our thing that some other sides call attack. Georgia though don't slow the ball much and Youngs takes a few steps down the right/shortside before moving the ball out to Willis who takes some easy metres. England head back left and Faz passes to Slade, Slade passes to the mystery invisible man who fails to gather, shame as Slade had seen something there nobody else had, but Lawrence dives in to stop the ball going loose. JJ does really well to make a couple of metres as the acting 9 which keeps Georgia unable to get after our ball, Georgia should be looking at that as an opportunity to apply pressure utterly squandered. Youngs spots there's only a fullback in behind and roughly in the middle of the park so box kicks down the left into coffin corner and the retreating Georgia defence can only gather and run into touch for a 5m attacking lineout.
Minute 5
England win the lineout and set a maul, maul collapses advantage Blue. England put hang a high kick up from left to right which May contests but it's knocked on so back for the pen.

Re: England Vs Georgia the minute by minute
Minute 6
From the whistle going for the knock on from May and with nobody going down needing treatment it takes England 35 seconds to get the ball in at the lineout. This ponderous approach is a consistent feature of our play and suggests either a specific strategy to slow the play, or Jones is conceding we're just not as fit as other top sides.
England win the lineout and rumble more infield than upfield, but we have the upper hand. Nearing the middle of the pitch Youngs takes the ball off the back and breaks right, he half breaks a tackle with a show and go but is held a few metres short in front of the sticks. Genge as a pick drive and then Stuart...
Minute 7
... and then Genge again, and then Stuart again, on the second Stuart attempt he does have a look to see if he could get the ball over the line but that slows the ball coming back more than threatens the line. Willis with another pick play, Willis thinks he might be shoved over with held from Joe and Genge but nothing clear and we're back for a pen which England elect to take as a scrum

Re: England Vs Georgia the minute by minute
Minute 8
It takes over a minute from the whistle for the scrum to even start to engage as England continue to inject turgidity into their attack, but at least the scrum stays up. Billy breaks right does a little pirouette and gets shunted a metre or two forward with help from Itoje.
Minute 9
Ball goes right to Stuart who presents the ball well enough after being nudged backwards in contact (by a double tackle). Right again for Willis who has to roll around on the floor a little before getting the ball back, then heading back left for Billy to carry again, Billy like Stuart loses contact after being ganged up on, but the ball comes back on our side. This time it's out to the backs, the backs could have worked to the shoreside to overload Georgia there, not sure their forwards would've wrapped quickly enough and we had a number of backs close in to that ruck. However it's left open and Farrell is there to just shuttle the ball along with no interest in trying to interest any defenders whatsoever. The ball is pulled back to May who has no overlap to work with nor anyone to pass to all that close, and decided to dink the ball ahead. Possibly there's an interesting much straighter grubber on for May for he puts the ball over the defensive line towards coffin corner and it rolls into touch around 6m from the Lelos line.

Minute 10
Sometimes in rugby you need to throw double top when put under pressure, here's a solid throw into the 20 under no pressure from England whatsoever, and this from a side with a lock at 6. Because why wouldn't you not put pressure on a lineout when taking pain in other areas for picking a lock at 6
Georgia had a shortened lineout from which they don't look to set any maul. Nor do Georgia tap the ball down off the top, they come back to earth, obviously have lots of space around their lineout for defenders to push through as it's substantially shortened, then pass back to 9 who doesn't seem to know who he wants to pass to, not that any of the carrying options looks keen to be passed to. The ball is passed across several Georgian players goes to ground and is knocked on almost in front of the posts. A weird design on an exit play and then badly executed.
The ball was knocked on around 10 seconds into the minute and only comes into the scrum with 1 second left in the minute, and even that's worse than it sounds as Owens had stopped the clock for a period whilst the forwards were busy doing feck all.
Minute 11
England win the scrum and a penalty advantage, Billy breaks right and feeds Lawrence coming on a hard line, Lawrence jumps to claim the pass and thus into the tackle but on we go. Joe with a pick drive then Willis, then Youngs passes left to George at 1st receiver who passes along to Daly. Daly hints at passing further out but drives into the line, sort of breaks a tackle and then gets taken down with a soak tackle which would slow the arrival of support but there's precious little support. Genge is there, but Joe is wrapping around in support for the next play, Lawrence backs up past Farrell only to have Farrell realise no is supporting bar Genge and Georgia have men on their feet over the ball. It's all broken down and we're back for the scrum penalty, and all it took for the whole thing to break down was for a back at first receiver to elect to take contact, and we wonder why the first receiver is so happy to kick.
England elect to scrum again, but with 30 seconds on the clock there's not actually time to do anything else in the minute.

Minute 12
There's a bit of time with the time off for Owen to speak to the forwards about the need to get on with the scrum or some such.
Other than that there's a scrum, it goes up, penalty England.
Minute 13
In fairness to the forwards they really get on with the scrum in this minute, England electing to take the pen as a scrum, and the ball comes into the scrum with a whole 2 seconds left in the minute.

Minute 14
The scrum goes up again, this time it's just scrum again same ball. The forwards all being stood where the scrum is doesn't mean much, nothing actually happens in the minute bar establishing a desire to reset the scrum
Minute 15
England win the scrum and pass left to the shortside with Daly stood at 1st receiver takes the ball up hard between White 9 and 14 but he's put down and Billy arrives to clearout with a technique that's less about rugby and more WWE as he spins himself over the top doing nothing useful in the process, next up is Itoje and he does get White 7 off the ball allowing Youngs to pass from the base. I don't have any sympathy for White 7 not getting a pen as he went off his feet, never released and by the time Itoje gets him off England have secured a 5 second ruck from 1st phase off their own attacking set piece. Clearly this is another move going nowhere it would seem.
Youngs passes one out to the left where Willis takes the ball and goes into contact with White 8, partly with some assistance from Joe but mainly because White 8 is far too passive into contact Willis is over for a try. Who knew all it took was a 5 second ruck at first phase with some wonky ruck work.

Thanks as ever, Digby. Do you think England are slower than other teams re: scrums and lineouts? I assumed it is a fairly general malaise.

Minute 16
Nothing happens. God probably doesn't know how the rules on having a minute to kick work.
Minute 17
Faz kicks the extras
Georgia kick off right and deep where May takes the ball and runs up almost to the edge of the 22, and a little infield to create an angle for the kick? With the box kick an option and the left footed Slade and Daly I'm not sold you need to be 16m infield, that seems like a chance to give a kickable penalty if you cock up the ruck. Youngs box kicks, White 8 takes it around 14m from the touchline and just ahead of the chase from Lawrence, George and Farrell, almost a good kick but not quite. George makes the tackle Willis tries to fold over the ball and that's the next exciting instalment done.

Not sure actually, my impression is yes but a lot of that could be paying more attention to England. And I wouldn't mind as much but we keep getting statements they want to play at pace, have an attack that goes beyond what others can do, and then they keep intentionally slowing the game.Mr Mwenda wrote:Thanks as ever, Digby. I'm also aware playing at more pace is something we happily saw under Clive, but the bigger thing there wasn't us, it was that Ireland and Wales and so on trained in the pub with a pack of silk cut and a cheeky 8 pints in the afternoon. And maybe that still clouds our, or at least my, expectations.
One other thing, we didn't fatigue ourselves playing at pace against Georgia, but the players know they've bigger matches coming up and as we saw in the WC you can't keep pasting yourselves. Which is a reasonable defence, even if it's a frustration as a fan in a given game

Re: England Vs Georgia the minute by minute
Minute 18
Georgia run their attack routine, pass one out and lose contact, this time against Ewels and Joe. Then Georgia form a caterpillar, make a box kick and May can't claim the ball, knock on and scrum white.
Minute 19
Georgia hold the scrum up and win the ball. White 8 picks up the ball and runs left. Normally teams don't run left 'cause you're engaging the extra defender but Georgia have a plan. With their 8 picking up at the base the 9 will back up into Youngs blocking him off. Youngs shoves White 9 out of the way and then doesn't lose contact with White 8, not sure if that's good work from Youngs or lamentable work from White 8. White 8 passes left to a 3 man group the receiver has the man outside him push ahead before the ball is received making it harder for them to support themselves but do get 2 men over the ball to protect the counter ruck, the counter being Farrell leaning on them slightly, and from there they play left again off a 4 second ruck. Pretty much the entire Georgian side are stood in 20m of what might be space if less of them were stood there.
Willis pushes up in defence and misses the tackle, his career does not yet speak to whether he misses tackles in a positive leadership way like some people or whether it'll be held against him. Next up Georgia pass out to White 7 who slips past Itoje because Itoje is lining up the same Geogian invisible player, possibly he's a relation to the invisible English player Slade passed to earlier. Really not sure what Itoje was doing there, perhaps trying to drive a player sideways away from support? Georgia pass back to their 10 who dinks ahead down the right touchline, Daly comes across and could play the ball but ushers it into touch eschewing the risk.

Minute 20
Joe wins the lineout at the front under poor competition from Georgia, Youngs sticks a long box kick into Georgia's half nowhere close to touch or being contestable, Georgia kick it back where Billy fields and the chaser runs up and accidentally runs past Billy without making a tackle, which may or may not be judged classic French fullback play, Billy though was already spinning to earth expecting the hit. England run a phase heading close to the touchline before Youngs puts in another box kick into Georgia's half, again not contestable but White 8 has May on his back as he comes down with the ball. White 8 fights to drive though May by a couple of metres which is part useful but doesn't make it easier to support him, Willis is over the ball and forces a penalty for holding on.

Minute 21
England kick the pen to touch into Lelos 22. England shorten the lineout and Youngs is the front lifter, England throw to Youngs who turns and could pass off his left to Billy, but either doesn't quite spot his man or just wants to transfer the ball to pass off his right as we head right, it's not much especially with Georgia essentially asleep in defence but it does cost some fraction of a second in what one assumes is a planned move. Whatevs, Youngs passes to Billy, Billy has a lot of space to run into and elects to shove the ball wider who carries into White 10 and easily wins contact, and now we're running back left off a quick play the ball Farrell carries down the shortside, it's a 2 on 2 but crucially Daly the man outside Farrell has a fat slow forward ahead of him and Faz can put Daly into a big hole, hurrah, Faz kicks the ball away, boo. Ball goes out for a Georgia lineout just out from their line

Minute 22
Georgia throw long over the lineout and Joe runs up to possibly try to wrap up White 8 and force a scrum turnover, whatever he gets it wrong and simply bounces out of the tackle, but at least White 8 has something go right. Georgia box kick clear for a lineout to England abut 30m from their line down their right. Just as White 9 is picking up the ball to make the kick Owens decides that the moment to reach in and touch the White 9 to tell him he wants the ball played, I get Owens mayn't speak Georgian, but whilst I wouldn't mind the tap before the 9 crouches down to wait until he is seems a little witless, it'd piss me off at 9 to get that needless distraction.

Minute 23
England win lineout ball at the front with Itoje, he sort of double pumps the ball to suggest ball back to Youngs but nothing doing, but the third time's a charm and Youngs is heading right before flinging a high pass at Farrell, Farrell gathers and has 3 backs outside him, of which he drops the ball off to Lawrence heading back on a hard line against the play. Pretty well supported by Willis and Itoje. Ball out to Ewels for a functional carry and then Itoje quickly plays the ball at the base on a pick drive. Heading right from the next breakdown, or where the ball happens to be on the floor where there's no actual breakdown, and England have a huge overload of numbers on the right, can they fudge this up?
Yes
Ball passed to Genge at first receiver and he has Farrell looping around him, it's taking place conservatively 83 miles from the defensive line and the defence just drifts, but we can still make the play work, albeit we don't. Farrell with a miss one pass to Daly who's on the edge of the Lelos line which draw the 15 and allows Daly to pass to May in space on the outside, May has overrun the play and the ball goes forward as he tries to gather the pass going behind him. Even had the pass stuck Georgia would have had defenders closing May down on the angle as they didn't have to even consider committing to anything let along actually biting in on anything.

Re: England Vs Georgia the minute by minute
Minute 24
Georgia win a scrum penalty and can exit under no pressure. Georgia kick to touch but Daly does excellently to claim the ball and fling it infield where May boots it downfield and chases, Georgia kick it back...
Minute 25
... Daly gathers and goes into contact. Ball out to Genge who moves the ball on to Willis for a nice gain, there is the ball from Genge has the appearance of not going backwards or sideways, but as ever you never know what Owens will choose to care about, and it's not this. From a few meters inside our half we don't want to play, Youngs puts in a contestable box kick down the right as we look at it, it's a decent take by White 9 and not quite read by Slade who could and perhaps should have applied more pressure.
White 6 takes contact for the loss of a few metres, White 1 takes contact for the loss of a few metres. Georgia give up and box kick down their left. All of Georgia's play is so slow there's even less point than one might assume, they simply aren't going to be in the game not taking any risks, and really what's the worst that can happen? The kick isn't contestable, Daly gathers and makes a few metres back over halfway.

Minute 26
Youngs out to Willis at 1st receiver, he rumbles forwards into contact and wins contact but overall probably a net play. Left again this time to Farrell at 10, and Willis winning contact has seen Georgia not get enough defenders wrapping around to the open side. England on the attack with numbers to their left. Billy and Stuart hold defenders and Farrell pulls it back for JJ, JJ pulls it back for Slade which at this point isn't needed just stick it down the line but whatever, Slade out to George who with a give and take can send Lawrence dow the line for a 1 on 1, but Slade shovels the ball forward.
With a mere 30 seconds left in the minute nowt else happens

Minute 27
Apologies now as I'm being told I should stop this and pay attention to other people in my family, which isn't unreasonable as a request even if it's unwelcome. I shall try to reach HT, given I'm being enticed with wine to pay attention to something else it's possible I'll not return to this today, or at least not in short order.
Georgia win ball from their scrum and head left/open where White 12 runs ahead and gets knocked down by Billy, it's not exactly a low tackle but it is play on and just don't push that any further please. White 9 box kicks from the base, no blockers in place and Itoje gets a partial charge down, the ball goes up to be claimed but England can't get cleanly at it and Georgia sort of claim the loose ball before being pinged at the ruck
England presumably kick to touch into the Georgian 22, or at least in the next minute they have a lineout there

Re: England Vs Georgia the minute by minute
Minute 28
Itoje wins lineout ball at the back of a shortened lineout, and passes back to Billy once down with some of the hallmarks of setting a maul, Billy breaks right and passes right to Youngs. Youngs is having to twist and look back on the inside to make the pass he wants and there's little going on outside so the defence probably isn't going to be fooled by the play back inside.
I've no idea who Youngs is trying to pass to, probably not Billy else that pass would be made, perhaps JJ working off the left wing, especially given JJ's run is so committed he runs right into a defender without the ball, but the ball back on the inside goes across Billy and JJ to Genge who sets about not running into one of his own players ahead of him before spilling the ball in contact, and contact with a 10. I suspect Eddie in analysis may observe we make less errors when kicking the ball away.
White 9 gathers the spilt ball and hoofs it up to halfway, Farrell takes the ball and runs back slipping the ball to Daly who takes a few metres and then there's a very quick play the ball from Youngs, those last 3 moments were all good, so we can actually play. We have a passive play into contact which I thought was Billy yesterday but was actually Genge, and then Farrell takes the ball to the line and gets a pass away which is knocked on by a Georgian hand. Youngs passes back to May at first receiver who does something, with a normal person he'd get himself into trouble going in circles but being stupidly fast people just give themselves a moment to get set for May and he's able to not only get caught behind the line but take a metre with his drunken bumblebee run up the pitch.
Minute 29
Farrell kicks a high ball into the Georgian 22 for advantage over and Lelos to call the mark. Georgia kick to touch and Daly takes a quick lineout, which even if it doesn't work is a rare statement of intent. Ball worked to May in the middle who takes 30m or so before going to ground, England have a functional play going left and Georgia give away a penalty.

Minute 30
Excellent touch finder from Faz, England win the attacking lineout deep in Lelos' 22 and George attaching to the rear gets his hands on the ball, England drive forwards and not too quickly before George can drop over the line for a try.
Minute 31
Farrell connects with the ball just as the minute is ending , and to avoid the suspense carrying forwards the 2 points are added.

Italy kick out on the full. Not as bad as the minute nothing happened but surely the players should be required to put in more effort than this?

Minute 33
England win the scrum and Youngs passes the ball from the base on the half volley to Slade who fires the ball wide for May, May kicks down the touchline and Lawrence chases hard leaving Georgia to try and kick clear but the ball is out for an attacking England lineout.
Minute 34
England win the lineout, George gets his hands on the ball at the back, England drive up and George scores a try, if anything this one looked easier.

No conversion added with the ball merely pushed across the posts.

Re: England Vs Georgia the minute by minute
Minute 36
Georgia kick off long and to the left, Billy gathers runs to the edge of the 22, Youngs clears, JJ chases a kick that's a little too long and tackles the catcher.
Georgia run a play going backwards into Launch and Itoje and then a play edging forward into Ewels and Stuart. From the ball at the base Willis pushes up because in truth the ball is out but Owens allows Georgia an uncontested play and asks Willis to go back, and Willis does as asked. I suppose we were a little lucky not to get pinged there as some refs would decide, if unfairly, Willis was influencing play so maybe Owens realises he's barring a contest for the ball in the name of who knows what. White 9 makes a really short box kick, so short it's at least contestable and JJ can only knock it on, ball reclaimed by Georgia who thread a kick down the left touchline which bounces into touch. Adv. over and lineout for Blue.
Minute 37
Itoje wins the lineout, we run a phase infield, it doesn't remotely challenge but it's only being done to allow Farrell an angle to kick clear. The kick downfield does find grass but it's down the middle and collected after one bounce. Georgia kick it back over Lawrence's head but he tracks back and doesn't let the ball bounce, Lawrence then wellies it back into Georgia's 22 splitting the 2 backfield sweepers and rolling on nearly to the try line, it's a better outcome than the Farrell kick and thus an esteemed member of this board will be relieved to see a kicking game on a centre.
