Premiership Predictions Thread 2020-202?
Someone mentioned the Premiership was back on this weekend - I had completely lost track of time across this long off-season - so an undignified scramble to get a long-standing board tradition up and running again.
Gods help us trying to predict this year. Starting the season with internationals missing, having them back for a couple of weeks before they go off again for the 6N, then maybe finishing the season at some point next year, possibly before the Lions tour idk? Plus, who's gonna be able to predict what the pandemic's gonna be this year? Personally, I think swine flu is due a comeback, but then I am the person who picked Jamal Ford-Robinson to have a good season last year, so take my opinion with the respect it deserves.

Re: Premiership Predictions Thread 2020-202?
Premiership Winner:
Sale. It is tempting to say Exeter, but I'm going to be daring and say the other side who rarely loses any players to internationals might squeak over the line, simply because South Africa have abdicated from playing international rugby for a while.
Table order:
Exeter
Sale
Bristol
Wasps
Northampton
Bath
Quins
Worcester
Leicester
Gloucester
Irish
Newcastle
European predictions - how will the English teams do?
I am genuinely confused htf this new European system with the two pools of 12 works. It feels like it might just be decided by which teams give a sh*t and which teams just rest all their players. I think Exeter will be motivated to try and double up, with maybe one other English side joining them - most likely Bristol, given both the size of their squad and Lansdowne's ego. I think another final appearance for Exeter and quarter final for Briz.
Top try scorer:
SSimmonds
Top points scorer:
Gopperth
Surprise of the season:
Leicester get a little bit of a run of form towards the end of the season, lifting them from 11th to 9th.
Biggest disappointment:
Even tiny crowds not allowed back into stadiums till end of March.
Player having a breakthrough season:
Barbeary feels like the obvious answer and I genuinely think he'll be in the England squad if we have a summer tour during the Lions. Other than that, I'd say Martin at Leicester
Best signing:
Hard to do, as there's been so few new signings in the off-season (such as it is). I'm hoping for big things from Cyle Brink and Matias Moroni at Leicester, but given their recent history, I think I'll go for Bristol's league poach of Ratu Naulago
Best unheralded signing:
Jamie Gibson for Glaws
The [Redacted] Award for lowest performance to hype ratio from a new signing:
It's cheating a bit because he's an existing signing, but Manu Tuilagi. Injured for half the season, England duty for the rest of it. It's far less irritating when he's somebody else's expensive paperweight.
The Jerome Schuster Award for worst signing:
Torn between Mulipola and Luther Burrell

Premiership Winner:
Exeter. I just cannot see past them. They seem to cope well with international window losses/Jones stubbornness on picking Simmonds x 2.

European predictions - how will the English teams do?
Who knows. I can see two semi finalists (Exeter and Wasps), after that it’s a bit of a lottery.
Top try scorer:
Rory McConniche left to run riot while the other top wings are away on international duty.
Top points scorer:
J Simmonds
Surprise of the season:
The RFU don’t use the current situation to ringfence the Premiership. Instead they want Sarries back as soon as possible and are willing to lose a bottom team to get that.
Biggest disappointment:
Farrell doesn’t get injured or banned in any international so we don’t have to see his gurning face for 6 months.
Player having a breakthrough season:
If he can get time playing I think it will be Barbeary.
Best signing:
Jamie Gibson to have a revival at Glaws.
Best unheralded signing:
Marcus Smith to Bath (if the rumours are anywhere near correct).
The [Redacted] Award for lowest performance to hype ratio from a new signing:
Luther Burrell.
The Jerome Schuster Award for worst signing:
Manu Tuilagi who comes back from injury, gets injured in his next match and then retires.

European predictions - how will the English teams do? I don't understand this competition this year, and haven't got my head around who's playing whom; so... Exeter, Wasps and Bath to get to the knock-out stages. Exeter to lose the final

Top points scorer: Simmonds
Surprise of the season: Leicester actually find some form and start climbing the table
Biggest disappointment: Newcastle don't even put up a fight
Player having a breakthrough season: Cameron Redpath

European predictions - how will the English teams do?
Exeter to make the final
Bath to make the quarters
Top try scorer:
Nathan Earle (doubling down)
Top points scorer:
Marcus Smith
Surprise of the season:
An orange card for high tackles will be introduced.
Biggest disappointment:
Refs will tell scrum halves to "use it". They will be ignored.
Or
Sale Sharks add up to less than the sum of their South African parts
Player having a breakthrough season:
Beck Cutting
Best signing:
Kyle Sinckler (should fit really well and improve Bristol a lot)
Best unheralded signing:
Matt Scott (got to stick by him)

Re: Premiership Predictions Thread 2020-202?
Premiership Winner: Exeter - the obvious answer but can't see past them. Even after two brutal European games they did enough to beat Wasps for the double.
Table order:
Bristol
Exeter
Wasps
Sale
Bath
Quins
Gloucester
Worcester
Leicester
Northampton
London Irish
Newcastle
European predictions - how will the English teams do? I think Wasps will decimate a couple of sides in style during the group stages but ultimately falter in the knock out stages. Chiefs to again be a serious contender but go out just before the final. Bristol and Bath struggle to make it out the group.
Top try scorer: Nathan Earl
Top points scorer: Marcus Smith
Surprise of the season: Northampton can't seem to get their mojo back and continue the ore lockdown form. Boyd walks at end of the season.
Biggest disappointment: no fans in stadiums, football get preferential treatment and rugby is left out of pocket and on a financial knife edge.
Player having a breakthrough season: Freddie Steward the future England fullback.
Best signing: Radrada as he's technically signed up for this season.
Best unheralded signing: Joe Batley to bring some real dynamism to the Worcester second row or Adendorff as a line bright spark in a torrid season for Saints.
The [Redacted] Award for lowest performance to hype ratio from a new signing: Manu Tuilagi due to his repeated injury issues.
The Jerome Schuster Award for worst signing: Blake Enever or Nick Auterac.
Table order:
Bristol
Exeter
Wasps

Disappointed I didn’t think of Auterac TBH. If he doesn’t make something of the Saints move, maybe we could think about renaming the award?

So much early promise and then he's just bounced around several clubs achieving so very little. I'd be interested to know whether it's his lifestyle, attitude or some sort of physical issue holding him back.Scrumhead wrote:Disappointed I didn’t think of Auterac TBH. I remember reading something about Auterac clashing with the coaches at Bath, but who knows if anything similar happened at Quins.

European predictions - how will the English teams do?
Wasps and Sale to Quarters, Bristol to Semis, Exeter runners-up.

Top points scorer: JSimmonds
Surprise of the season: Sale coasting to a top 4 spot are found to have broken Covid regulations quite badly, docked points and half their team lost to quarantine for the next game. They end up dropping out of the top 8.
Biggest disappointment: Sale's actions cast a cloud over English rugby once more.
Player having a breakthrough season: Hard to look past Barbeary
Best signing:
Tyrone Green finally getting onto the pitch and being a bright spark in a dreadful Quins season.
Best unheralded signing: George Merrick

The Jerome Schuster Award for worst signing: One of the 3,219 Leicester signings. Or Luther Burrell.

Re: Premiership Predictions Thread 2020-202?
I read an article about him not so long ago where he said he didn’t buy in to the coaching philosophy at Bath.FKAS wrote:So much early promise and then he's just bounced around several clubs achieving so very little. I'd be interested to know whether it's his lifestyle, attitude or some sort of physical issue holding him back.Scrumhead wrote:Disappointed I didn’t think of Auterac TBH. If he doesn’t make something of the Saints move, maybe we could think about renaming the award?
No rumours of anything negative at Quins, apart from his wholly anonymous performances.

I don't recall any particular clashes (disagreements about game-plan, rather than personality etc).Adam_P wrote:I remember reading something about Auterac clashing with the coaches at Bath, but who knows if anything similar happened at Quins.
He was thought to be very unhappy in Bath - too far away from his mates in London

I predicted Boyd would walk at the end of the season and he's just signed a one year extension.
Don think anybody has Falcons on 8 points after two games either.

Well...guess Sale have put paid to my predictions by casting Diamond off already.Stom wrote: Surprise of the season: Sale coasting to a top 4 spot are found to have broken Covid regulations quite badly, docked points and half their team lost to quarantine for the next game. They end up dropping out of the top 8.
Biggest disappointment: Sale's actions cast a cloud over English rugby once more.

Or could Sale go up a gear with a new coach. It worked for Wasps last season.

Definitely. I just don't think they'll get into trouble anymore, since Diamond is gone.Shiny wrote:Or could Sale go up a gear with a new coach. It worked for Wasps last season.
