Indeed he was! One of the all-time best hookers in World rugby.

Eng. captain when started playing rugby at school - always conducted himself in a dignified manner it seemed, leading a usually run-of-the- mill XV.
1973 a special year for him, captaining Eng to a win in NZ ( first time in eons ) and was involved in 'that try' - shipping the ball on near his own line.
Memories...RIP
(should mention 7 Lions caps, 2 tours including the brilliant '71 team - only saw the latter in highlight clips after, unfortunately).

By all accounts a great bloke. Very fondly remembered in Ireland after bringing England to play in Dublin, when Wales and Scotland had refused to travel during "the Troubles". Ireland won. His famous after dinner speech began with something like "we may not be much use but we turn up."
