Heard about Finland trying this and now seeing a number of other countries/states trying it too.
Instinctively, and with no knowledge of economics, it seems like a cracking idea to me, although I'm not sold on all the freedoms mentioned in the article. I still think there is huge potential for inequality and strife if UBI isn't done properly, which it almost certainly wouldn't be.
Looking to the future, my biggest concern is the march of automation and how society deals with that and the potential loss of jobs for so many. This could be a way of dealing with that.

Universal Basic Income
It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Much better to have a jobs guarantee.
Finland is a neoliberal nut house that is being voluntarily strangled by being in the Eurozone.

As for the maths. There are mathematic 'theories' on both sides, they are not the same as mathematical facts. I asked for maths.

This week's Freakonomics podcast is on the very subject, particularly with regards to automationDonny osmond wrote:Heard about Finland trying this and now seeing a number of other countries/states trying it too.

If you listen to the Freakonomics podcast you'll find that many libertarians such as Hayek were in favour.morepork wrote:Leftie nonsense. Communism by stealth, etc etc.

I was parroting the general talk back radio response to discussion of the idea.

I know. I just thought that you and others might be interested that there is right wing support for the idea.morepork wrote:Eugene Wrayburn wrote:If you listen to the Freakonomics podcast you'll find that many libertarians such as Hayek were in favour.morepork wrote:Leftie nonsense. Re: Universal Basic Income
Even the fake lefty Guardian is getting into UBI now.
Welcome to the world of a unconditional basic income, or UBI, otherwise known as citizens’ income or social wage. It might look like the stuff of insane utopianism, but the idea is now spreading at speed, from the fringes of the left into mainstream politics – and being tried out around the world. The UK Green party has supported the notion for decades: staunch backing for a version of UBI was one of its key themes at the last election. At its spring conference last month, the Scottish National party passed a motion supporting the idea that “a basic or universal income can potentially provide a foundation to eradicate poverty, make work pay and ensure all our citizens can live in dignity”. A handful of Labour MPs have started to come round to the idea – and serious work is being done among thinktanks and pressure groups, looking at how it might work in the here and now.
John Harris.
Why not a full employment policy?
