Mind, I'd say that's a bit of a function that you haven't taken many absolute newbies with you. South Africa have got a 43 man-squad (for some reason) and 8 of them are uncapped, which is bringing down their average massively.

Aging for what though? For the next RWC theres only a couple of players who are obviously in decline. I expect a good number to retire after that (or maybe the next Lions tour) which would include the likes of Faletau and Tipuric.

Take out AWJ and Biggar from the squad and you bring the average down by a fair margin. As you say lies, damned lies and newspaper statistics!
