A French court on Tuesday sentenced French Rugby Federation (FFR) president Bernard Laporte to a two-year suspended term for corruption, less than a year before France hosts the World Cup.

Laporte was convicted after the court ruled he showed favouritism in awarding a shirt sponsor contract for the national side to a close friend, Mohed Altrad, the billionaire owner of Top 14 champions Montpellier.

Laporte's lawyer said he would appeal. He was also banned from holding any rugby post for two years but this is suspended pending the appeal.

Laporte has now stepped down from his position of World Rugby Vice President. I understand he’s being pressed to resign as President of the FFR.

I mean, him carrying on in any administrative role is pretty much untenable and each day he’s FFR president chips away at the organisation’s credibility.

Unless that suspension is upgraded to a full-blown dismissal, the FFR won't be doing themselves any favours. They need to throw his ass to the curb yesterday.

As from today, January the 24th, Laporte has been remanded in custody for money laundering, a separate charge to the one detailed in earlier posts, for which he has been given a two-year-suspended prison sentence.

However, his two-year-suspended prison sentence still stands, although an appeal is expected by Laporte.

So he's finally resigned from the FFR. Why hasn't World Rugby booted the bent shit?
