We are truly fucked when actual data is criticised for being biased. More scientists, fewer shareholders please.

Tories - launching a war on free speech, Gary Linekar and David Attenborough, all in one day.

What a good tactic

Just to make everyone aware, I also won't be presenting Match of the Day.

Fucking shambles by the BBC. A news presenter might have to be impartial, but a sports host should be able to have opinions on his own personal social media, especially given he's not said anything that's remotely incorrect.

Whatever next? "Liverpool won, but for balance here's someone who thinks Man Utd won."

That my view too. BBC news must be impartial, but surely the cast of eastenders are allowed to say what they think on social media? Or Lineker? The bigger question for me is how the BBC chairman got his job after helping Boris’ financial situation.

That’s being reported in a number of papers today and there may be some truth to that. My understanding is that they are showing it on iPlayer but not as part of the normal series which I don’t understand but then I don’t work in TV.

The issue with Lineker is more serious although I suspect the bbc management is happy for anything to distract from the row over the chairman.

It's actually really weird that you would start a thread with this title and use this article as the starting point. It's completely self-contradictory, the latter paragraphs utterly give the lie to the artificial hysteria of the opening paragraphs?!

Some truth? The thread contains a historical press release stating the sixth episode was always destined for iplayer.
Lineker is definitely more serious and not only because it’s actually a story rather than a fabrication.
I also reckon Lineker is happy about the distraction from his tax troubles.

I'd always assumed the statue was a bronze, but apparently, it's pure irony.

Excellent.

There's something incredibly cathartic about watching Jonathan Pie lose his shit over the latest enormity from the government. Reduces my own need to scream, just an iota.

The social media policy is absurd.

If you are a proper civil servant then you do have to accept that you can't criticise government policy anywhere on line. I've been a civil servant and its pretty damn clear. That said, no covid servant is on TV like Linneker is with such a mass following.

The BBC isnt core civil service, albeit still public sector. Like many other public sector organisations, the BBC should ensure that its staff aren't causing embarrassment in their social media activities, but there a big difference between making a statement on a personal social media account and making the same statement on a BBC programme. I'd suggest the BBC would have had more right to be upset if Match of the Day was suddenly a commentary on refugees.

Since Linneker is about to be re-installed in his old role, this has been a proper embarrassment for the BBC which needs to think through what its red lines really are in this area.

So what this has done is deflect from what Lineker was trying to highlight in the first place, the potnetially illegal and heartless proposals of the governments immigration policy, the story is now about BBC impartiality and not the actual main issue which needs to be discussed, classic media deflection...

Yeah, if it was from the MOTD twitter account then that would be another matter but this is freedom of speech and personal opinion.

This is what bitching out on climate policy really looks like:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64943603

The whole world needs an HIA because of this mad rush to a political centre. What a fucking cop out.

Edit: "The company’s plan includes drilling on top of permafrost and constructing a network of chilling tubes to keep it frozen even as the region warms".

The need for cooling tubes to support the infrastructure for the oil that is causing the melting of permafrost is a nice touch.

I think the Tories will be secretly pleased. Their polling on this indicates good levels of support amongst 2019 voters especially in red wall areas. And they haven’t got the blame for attacking a popular celeb, the BBC has.

Not exactly surprising when the BBC's director-general and chairman are both Tories.

Maybe - not every coincidence is planned. But its certainly been on the agenda for the Tory right to discredit/ overhaul/ destroy the BBC for some time so I expect them to be adding petrol to the debate where possible.

Keir Starmer's entire PMQ's was about Lineker. War in Ukraine, China sabre rattling, inflation, potential banking collapse, climate change (houses falling in the sea in Norfolk), strikes......not a word.

Seems like an unusual mistep from the Captain of Carefully Does It. While the Tory attacks on refugees may be utterly reprehensible, they're also popular with some of the voters that Starmer is looking to court and I would've expected him to stay quiet rather than defend a refugee-loving-champagne-socialist-lefty-liberal-Beeb-presenter.

Aye- weird to have that one line of attack tbh.
