Yep, absolute shithouse of a player that you just wished was on your side. Got to respect that.

As we say in Ireland - he may be a horrible nob, but he's OUR horrible nob. I hope he goes out with a bang against France. He'll be up for a big one.

As this is vaguely Irish related do people think bernie was at fault for duponts injury?
The French are doubling down and demanding an appeal of some description

Personally no, because you see it 6 times a match, but it is the sort of clear out that should be clamped down on. Off feet is rarely called so the pack just missile themselves into rucks.

I think the situation was too dynamic and unpredictable to call it "fault". Beirne didn't really do anything that hundred of other players don't do.
However, the way players, from all team, enter the ruck is dangerous, and ought to be looked at. Ireland may be a little worse in this respect than other teams.

Yes, it's reckless he's entering at speed with no control. No attempt to wrap and no attempt to stay on his feet. No way intentional I'd hasten to add, he's aiming for the 5 who he thinks is going in to support Dupont but then doesn't so he ends up clattering into the side of Dupont instead. If he's entered legally he could have bound on Dupont and driven through, as he entered illegally he just crashes into Dupont's leg meaning he probably won't play again this year.
Saying "lots of other players do the same" is not an excuse. Beirne was in the wrong.

Completely agree, but it needs to be penalised and it almost never is

Agreed. I'm more annoyed at World Rugby than anybody else. Beirne makes a mistake, intense game etc. World Rugby though continues to shat the bed on consistency time and time again.
Tom O'Toole red card and suspension in January for very similar challenge. Charlie Ewels last summer, red card and suspension near identical clearout. Then World Rugby are more focused on saving the face of the officials than player safety. Again.
The fact that Nash was mentioned in the same breath as Beirne re citing was because of the absolute mess that is head contact. Can't remember the Scottish player but there was a carbon copy tackle on Chessum the other week that was penalty only. Nash only goes to the bin because the French centre stays down. It's talked up as a potential citing though because there's absolutely sod all consistency going. The TMOs and off field reviews are supposed to help with that but when you've got the strategically shaved money Tempo in the TMO booth you've got no chance.

The TMOs are not performing well imo, Tempest, Jonker and Whitehouse - despite two assistants - are just weird with what they will and don't look at

I stopped reading at "Angus Gardner had a fantastic match'' .... Campese is not my favourite observer, mainly because he's so fvcking thick.

When is intent "intent"?
I doubt if Bernie thought 'Yay a chance to injure Dupont', but he very deliberately drove in low and hard on the side of someone's knee.

Define 'intent'. Surely, now, failing to apply duty of care is the equivalent of what used to be 'intent'.
Causing injury by not being careful is a red card/suspension-level offence in the same way that causing injury deliberately used to be.

I don't think Beirne had any intent to injure, and agree he shouldn't have been cited, but I don't think intent should be a determining factor for foul play. Reckless play is still worth discouraging.
The reason I don't think he should have been cited is that currently this approach to the breakdown is tolerated and I don't see a benefit to banning him due to the unfortunate outcome. I'd much prefer that World Rugby looked at changing the interpretations to stop the flying entries.

Arriving players must ‘Drive not dive’ to clear out an opponent. Shorten steps and bind, not dive off feet."

Think it's fair to say that's not consistently enforced though?

I'm afraid the lack of policing of existing ruck laws (and many others...cough scrum cough) has continued for many years. Its really irritating as if properly enforced, the game would be way better, ditto scrum laws
