Olympic Sevens
Can anyone enlighten me as to the qualification rules for the pools. With NZ loosing their first game, they obviously need to win the other two, but if Japan beat Kenya, and NZ beat GB, then GB, Japan and NZ will be on two wins. How does it work then, points difference?
Best case for NZ I guess is if Kenya beat Japan, then NZ beat GB, making it beyond doubt.

Points
Head to head

Points scored

Re: Olympic Sevens
So with JD's scenario above it comes down to points difference and then points scored?

Equally, France and SA go through on points difference from Aus who may get a lucky looser slot.
ETA: That try confirms Japan as going through.

Japan looking good for the win right now, NZ so if NZ beat GB, it will come down to points difference. Fck me, they need to win that game, and by a handsome margin.

Re: Olympic Sevens
Japan end up with 7 points, and +24 PD
If I've got my maths right:
If NZ win it comes down to points difference, if NZ win by 1 or 2, then GB and Japan go through
If NZ win by 3 or more, then NZ and Japan go though

Re: Olympic Sevens
OK, so if NZ win, Japan beats NZ, NZ beats GB, and GB beats Japan. So how does the head to head thing work?
For points diff, NZ currently sitting on 21, Japan on 24 and GB on 26. So NZ needs to win by 6?
Edit: by 3, doh.
C'mon kiwis.

If the kiwis win by 3 they go through in 2nd place
If the kiwis win by <3 they come 3rd on PD
A draw or GB win means kiwis come 3rd on match points.

Wait, it gets more complicated. The best two third place teams also go through to make 8 quarter finalists.
A win for NZ means they are through I believe.

Knew I was forgetting something this time - yes; your PD is enough to beat the Aussies as a lucky loser regardless or Argentina vs Brazil (who need to win by 8 to equal with the aussies and make it complicated again) - if you win.
C'mon GB - well played Norton & Bennett

Going to be an interesting last minute.
And just for form, the second try was forwards.

TFFT.
GB top the group; Japan go through in 2nd.
Assuming Argentina beat Brazil (or even draw), then NZ go home.

No, bugger; if Fiji beat USA (by more than 4); then USA will also finish on 5 points, and a worse PD than NZ; so they will go through. Dammit!

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
