An imam and his assistant were shot dead as they walked along a street in the New York borough of Queens.

The men were approached from behind by a man who shot them both in the head, a police spokesman said.

Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, moved to the city from Bangladesh two years ago, reports in New York said.

Police said there were as yet "no indications" the men were targeted because of their faith.

A man holding a gun was seen leaving the scene of the shooting in the Ozone Park area, but no-one has been arrested.

Looks like the only thing Muslims in America can do without it being related to the faith is being randomly shot in the head for the crime of walking down the street.

Nice to see this tucked away on the main BBC page.

Seems like quite a contrast in reporting styles between this and 'terrorist' related incidents.

In fact, I'd be surprised to see any mention of this story after a day or two, but had the gun been in the hands of a Muslim and the victims been white, well that would have some legs!

This is a terrorist attack surely? Maybe the gunman will turn out to be Muslim which will seal it.

It reads like an assassination. The obvious angles are racial or religious, unless there is another angle the police are aware of. Hopefully they find the fecker and quickly.
